I think that Carrie isn't standing up for herself. Her mother wants to control every aspect of her life. She doesn't really get to choose what she wants to do. It's mostly her mother telling her what to do. They have this closet in their house just for praying and that's fine but it seems like Carrie get out in there for the smallest reasons and the most nonsense reasons.
