She tumbled into her mother’s waiting hands and Faith showered her face with kisses. “You did it! Chase, did you see that? She did it.” “I absolutely saw it.” He waved his phone in the air. “Got it on video too.” He dropped down next to his girls. Anna giggled and crawled into his lap. Chase’s heart constricted when she laid her head on his chest. He kissed the top of her sweet head.

“Faith…” The word came out in a husky whisper. Her pulse skittered in response and then skyrocketed as Chase’s hand rose to cup her face. His thumb traced a line across the ridge of her cheek before dropping to skim her lips. A blaze of heat followed his touch. Any doubts she had about Chase’s feelings evaporated when their gazes met once more. Love, pure and simple, shone in the depths of his eyes.

Another shot exploded, followed by the ping of metal as it collided with Chase’s truck. Terror for Faith lodged itself in Chase’s heart. He blocked it out. He was no good to her if his mind was muddled by emotion. He re-doubled his efforts to free his weapon. Using his right hand made him want to scream. Where was his backup? Why was it taking so long?

She didn’t want to think about what could’ve happened. The danger hadn’t been restricted to herself and Anna. The kidnapper had a gun. He could’ve shot Chase when he arrived to rescue them. It was a terrifying realization and one that cut too closely to a familiar scar on her heart. Faith had already lost her husband. She couldn’t imagine losing her best friend too.

Everything was as it should be. Except for those boot prints. Who had been on her property? Faith didn’t have any close neighbors. She’d inherited the farm from her grandparents, and it was over ten acres, most of it wooded. It bothered her to think of someone being so close to her house. Cutler, Texas was a small town, but bad things happened everywhere. She’d watched enough real-life crime shows to know that much.
