This book starts off with a few boys from an orphanage. Peter is the leader of the boys since he always says he is one year older than the oldest one. In the beginning of the book, they have to be moved from the orphanage and taken to a ship. The ship is old and beaten down, and the boys are immediately afraid of it. The captain, Slank, looks even worse than the ship, so the boys start to expect the worst.

In this book, Peter, along with his friends, go on many adventures. However, he has as many enemies as he does friends, so he must always be cautious of his actions. For example, the pirate, Black Stache, is always trying to hunt Peter down to teach him a lesson. Slank, the captain of the ship Peter was on, will take any chance he can get to take advantage Peter. Peter must learn how to protect himself to survive.

In this book, Peter is an orphan that has to go on a ship to become a servant for King Zarboff. He has always been a leader, and wants it to stay that way. When everyone around him is afraid, he does not show his fear. He is bold, as well as smart, and that comes in handy throughout the book. Peter's personality is an important part of the events in the book because his decisions and actions effect the entire story.
