Verona, Italy 16 May 1918: Shot in very low light in the vault of the church of San Zeno de Maggiore in Verona, this plate required an exposure time of over a minute to register its subject. Yet by stretching the autochrome's capabilities Cuville produced an enchanting chiaroscuro representation of quiet childhood.

Kahn took his first autochromes on a trip around the world in 1908 and it is likely that during this circumnavigation he devised his plan to create what he called his Archives of the Planet--a photographic record of human life on earth. He would devote the next 22 years of his life and his fortune to the project, sending photographers and equipment to Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the Levant.
