One surprising thing is when new people went to Auschwitz. They were told lies that is would be nice but it is a horrible place. The new people believed what they said. It stated in the text "Have you heard of Auschwitz? Our kapo asked the new prisoners. No? Death, of course. Death waits for you. Look and see." This is surprising because Auschwitz is a horrible place and many people don't know what it is.

One sad thing was when Yanek was put into a camp. He and his family are all in the camp. The conditions were really bad. He was moved. He has to do work and try to survive. "Chandeliers made out of salt. After so many months and years of dirty street and peeling paint, of gray uniform and spartan barrack.(100) This was sad because he is holding on to his life and there are people wanting to kill him.

One sad part was when Yanek's parents were taken. Yanek and his family tried to hide from the Nazi but failed. His parents were put into a camp. He didn't know what to and wanted to give up. It stated in the book "Maybe I should just go and give myself to the Nazi, i though with bitterness, with defeat."(59) This is sad because he lost his family. He is all alone and by himself. He probably felt hopeless.

One sad part was when the Nazi took over Poland. Yanek lived a normal life before World War Two, but it quickly came to an end. They had to take in families even when they could barely feed them selves. They couldn't feed themselves because their shops were closed. It stated in the book "The work gangs and the lack of food made him look like he'd aged ten years in two."(19) This is sad because they were starving.
