I decided to read Tolkien's letters after a third failed attempt at getting through the Silmarillion, and it was the right move. I am not even halfway through the collection of letters but they've already offered a fascinatingly human and brilliant insight into the machinations of the world of Middle Earth. I also feel they will make me a more-informed reader of the Silmarillion if I were to delve so deep again.
