A self-assigned book-report project, there is no character development, the protagonist and his gang of drifters appearing for a page or two illicit no sympathies, there is no need to invest in anyone, including the POV Moriarty character. Perhaps I'm too far from the beat generation to appreciate it, too removed from the culture it so desperately needed to counter, but it seems so superficial and selfish.
