Elizabeth has became sort of embarrassed by her mom as she goes through her chemo treatments because she begins to loose her and begins to wear cheap wigs. The girls are beginning to learn to go with it, but its hard for Tilden to pretend like everything is normal. Mean while uncle rand is coming into to town to visit, and he seems to have a strained relationship with his sister due to his party hard life style.

The girls see the harsh side of cancer; they find wigs,their mom is often weak and too tired to do everyday activities with them. The girls are scared at the thought of this, but their mom continues to tell them not to believe in the "commercialism" of cancer. Shockingly, both girls ignore this and cut their hair after dinner in support of their mother..mistakenly it's the night before Tilden's 6th grade graduation.

Tilden is going through many things as her mom's process with chemo continues. She's just turned 13 and she feels like she's physically "behind" than the other girls her age, and her and Elizabeth can't seem to get along. Tilden is now forced to keep these issues to herself,and she feels sort of alone, but fails to express her true feelings.

It turns out that the secret appointment that Frances,Tilden's mom,had was for surgery to remove a tumor in her breast. Tilden,Elizabeth,and Nick are trying to rework their usual schedule until her mother gets better. Tilden is angry that her mom hid this big secret from everyone and she's learning to cope with it.

Tilden and Elizabeth began to become divided and start to fight more than even.Tilden is overly frustrated with her life;she has to move to a new state,make new friends,which isn't easy for,and she lives in Nick's house,whom she doesn't like.When she tries to tell her mother how she feels,her mom tells her that she has a secret appointment,so with that she comfortably keeps her feelings inside.

Right now,Tilden is going through a stage in her life where she is beginning to really see the differences between herself and Elizabeth. Elizabeth has the kind of personality that easily makes friends,while Tilden has trouble meeting new people and is trying to fit in.

so far,the girls are getting accustomed to living in their new home.
