Peter Van Houten was nothing like they expected him. He said that there was no ending for the characters in the book because as soon as the book ended, they ceased to exist. He told them that they were nothing but sick kids who were used to getting everything they wanted and they were side-effects of life. He told them they were messed up mutations and he wouldn't answer their childish whims for impossible answers.

Hazel wakes up in the middle of the night with the worst head pain she's ever had. She's rushed to the ICU and passes out for a few days. When she wakes up, she's told it was because there was a fluid buildup in her lungs which they drained and will have to continue draining regularly. This was the cause of her headache and shoulder pain.
