In the the book ponyboy and Johnny are at a church just relaxing reading and eating. They start to talk about a death and things begin to escalate. The go off and find a place in a blaze and they here crying from the inside so Johnny and ponyboy go in to save them and they do but Johnny is badly hurt. Ponyboy is fine but has some minor burns.
