I am happy the way the book ended. Nettie and Cecil are able to reunite afters years of not knowing where each other were. Cecil isn't abused anymore by her husband and Shug has decided to stay with Cecil.

Why does Nettie continue to live and help in Africa when disease is high, there isn't much food and shelter is bad? She must be a kind person to put her and her family through so much in order to help others.

Shug has a boyfriend, and Cecil is jealous. Shug is the only person who has loved her in her life. Cecil feels betrayed, and doesn't understand why Shug would date someone when Shug loves Cecil.

Cecil gets a letter that her sister is dead because their ship sunk along the way to Africa. Although, Cecil believes she is still alive somewhere. I wonder why Nettie wouldn't come home from Africa sooner if she missed her sister so much.

Cecil comes to vistit her hometown every so often. Suprisingly her old husband has changed dramatically. He is calm, kind and respectful. They are actually getting along and having small conversation.

Cecil has created a job for herself, making pants for women. This is unusual because women wore dresses and skirts and men wore pants. Although, Cecil doesn't care about the 'rules' of how women and men should dress. She makes pants because they are comfrotable.

Cecil finally has stood up to her husband and told him she is moving north with Shug to start a new life. I love this part of the book because it is a turning point for the character and Cecil gains confidence and strength.

Since Cecil found out her husband has kept the letters, she is furious. She has an urge to kill him and wants to get revenge on him. I would feel the same way if I was her.

Cecil finds out that her husband had been keeping all the letters from Nettie away from her. Cecil has wondered where her sister has been, and if she was alive or dead. If she would of had the letters she would have know and been able to keep in touch with her sister. Nettie has had to wonder how Cecil was doing since Cecil was never able to respond from the letters kept away from her.
