The expressions on the faces of man and boy turned from looks of
confusion to stunned disbelief as a dullish-grey figure surfaced from the
waves; the sunlight casting silver reflections off the creature’s piscatorial skin as it heaved itself from the water.

"What in the name of all that’s holy is that?” Dinah screamed,
flinging her trigger guard.
“Don’t do it!” urged Bass, but the warning came too late and Dinah fired off three quick rounds in the direction of the opening.
There sounded a scream like a thousand angry bears, and in the
blink of an eye something huge, its skin blackish-green in colour, flitted
beyond the far end of the hatch and was gone.

"What the hell is it?" Whetton asked, sighting his rifle.
"That," said the dandy, "is bad news."

There were other changes too; the colour of her skin seeming to lighten in tone, dark eyes that took on just the slightest tint of ocean blue, a round face that grew noticeably narrower, and a chin that developed a dimple similar to the one on my own face.
