it's more about murder and underground businesses and exploitation and abuse than I was prepared for

this book has all the environment nature ecology alive/sentient animals fusion beauty of Jeff VanderMeer's other novels, but it's much more character drama, the setting only the background for the story compared to the other books of his I've read
