All a bit silly.

Several of these stories show up the dangers of unrestricted capitalism, especially to those unfamiliar with it. Not sure if that was the intention or whether the comedy was the sole intent.

The over-arching set-up seems mainly to be an excuse for low-tech adventure stories.
