So have you read the other books in the series or did you just start with book 8?

started with book 8, my understanding is that they are non-linear enough that you don't need to read them in order. Liking it so far, little weird that there are no chapters, just 350 pages of straight narrative, w/o a lot of breaks in between.
It's funny you can see Pratchetts finger prints on game of thrones as well. Interesting to see all these very direct influences in that series
