The beginning of the book is quite surprising as one of the main characters, Rashad's, father kept telling him to go into the military as "there's no better opportunity for a black boy in this country than to join the army" (Reynolds 6). His dad keeps trying to push him to go into it but I think it's quite strange that he does.

People start pitying Rashad or start to move towards his side once they found out what happened to him, a huge beating causing in fractured ribs and internal bleeding causing him to need surgery.
