I’ve barely scratched the surface, but Peattie combines the language of our native history’s greatest naturalists with sweeping narratives spanning from pre-colonial America to the Industrial Revolution to beautifully discuss the many botanical quirks and aesthetic wonders of the trees our continent boasts. It is, and I don’t say this lightly, some of the most beautiful nature writing I’ve read.
