This moment was super emotional to read. It shows how depressed Alfred is and is just so saddening. "Dear Hannelore, The news is grim... To warm myself I think of summer in Heidelberg. I see you there. I can see you here now, your dark hair against you snug red sweater"(358) He misses her so much to the point where hes imagining her next to him, even though he might not ever see Hannelore again.

One moment that touched me deeply was something that the shoemaker said. It was about the war and how it had been stretched on for so many years. "This war has been stolen 6 years from this world... I have dear friends who are Russian... there is no happy ending here"(236) It really paints a picture of all the suffering and lost hope that the people living in this time period experienced.

I felt the animosity from Alfred when he spoke of the Russians in his poetic fashion. Sure, hes arrogant, but it really just paints a picture of what it was like for the people wanting to serve Hitler. "...listening to reports of the Russians plundering this region... So vulgar"(122) This really shows all of the hate, on both sides, that was going around throughout the Eastern world during the war.

One moment that was really emotional was when Florian saved Emilia. Florian and Emilia are both on opposing sides but he still saved her despite it. "I wanted to run, forget about her... But then I saw the droplets of blood in the snow coming beneath her bulky coat. And I could not."(16) This sample conveys Florian's empathy for Emilia, who might have been on the other side, and still saved her life.
