the surprise party - 2.75*
i didn't expect the twist at the end at all! there were moments where the writing felt choppy and stilted, and other moments where the dialogue felt dated, but that was more of a personal issue that i was able to push past. yes, these novels are relics of the past, but the surprise party holds up! however, this DID lead to a reading slump, so i'm putting this omnibus aside for now.

the new girl - 1.5*
the frenetic pace of the writing makes this super eerie and atmospheric, but was it really necessary to have a mutilated cat and then to have someone go "well, i guess it's good i hate cats!" after finding it in their locker? like, really? fuck that noise absolutely. finding a mutilated domestic animal in your locker would be traumatizing.
