This author is able to gain credibility by quoting many famous authors and philosophers whose ideas were popular at that time. It allows the book to not just be the author looking back at history but also explain how people felt at that time. An interesting example of this was the book ABC for Baby Patriots which has "C is for colonies" (Pagden 136). This shows that people wanted to teach kids about colonies.

Something that I found interesting that I didn't know before was that Burke disliked English imperialism in India because he feared it would make the Neglish government tyrannical. He described that if there were "Asian despots in India without wishing also, sooner or later, to become despots in England" (Pagden 97). He is not against the idea of Europeans colonizing Asia but how they were doing it.

The text structures the author uses the most are description and chronological sequence. They describe the empires and how they changed lives. In every chapter, there is a new topic that is explored chronologically. They do this so the reader doesn't get lost in the history and also so they can understand why each topic is important.

Update for week of 2/13-2/20.
Something interesting about the writing style is that each chapter has its own focus but they still interconnect. Chapter 4 was about "Conquering The Ocean" while that isn't the main focus of Chapter 5. It makes for an interesting telling of history and also makes it so nothing goes on for too long.

I researched Alexander the Great because I wanted to learn more about his life and how that made him a leader of the great empire. A quote from the book that made me want to research this was how he was "seen as the archetypal empire builder" (Pagden 11). I was able to better under how Alexander inspired so many other future leaders.

I am going to research the author because I started a new book and I want to learn about who is writing it. I think I will better understand who he is and why he wrote it.
