Right now in the book, Ryan was recently shipped out to Iraq. He crossed the boarder and is now stationed at an old air force base. This whole experience has totally changed Ryan. when he crossed the boarder he expected burning of American flags. However, what he saw was starving children begging for food. Also he hasn't had a bed to sleep in at the army camps, just his trucks hard floor.
