Celeste Ng seems to use a lot of compare and contrast in Everything I Never Told You. Most of the time this is used to show off the previous life of these characters before jumping towards the future to show off how they've changed because of it. It contrasts the parents lives with their childrens as well as their futures to their pasts. This is used to show off characters motives and differences from their parents.

Celeste Ng wants the reader to feel sadness towards this story. She wants the reader to look and feel bad about watching this family crumble apart. By watching this happen and the family spiral out of control you feel the pain they're feeling and inflicting upon one another and themselves. It's point is to make you feel sad and angry.
