Isabel is very tired of being a slave and being pushed around. In the book, Isabel takes all the time in the world to walk to Lady Seymour's house to be her slave while she had company. The text says," In truth, I did not walk there quickly. In truth, I dawdled something fierce"(188). This proves that Isabel is tired of listening to everyone's demands and feels no rush to do them.

Isabel is very uncomfortable because of all of the hardships she is going through in life. She is getting through the harsh, freezing winter in bad conditions. Isabel stated," I shuddered and my teeth banged together... It was a bad night to be without a blanket"(213). This shows that Isabel is strong because she is sleeping during the winter without a blanket and she is really cold.

Isabel is very comforting. In the book, it is the night her sister Ruth, got beaten by Madam Lockton and Isabel is comforting her while she is sleeping with her arm around her. The text says," Ruth fell asleep quick that night, my arms around her. I had washed out the blood from her kerchief and hung it to dry"(97). This proves that Isabel is comforting because she was showing her that someone does care about her.

Isabel is a very strong character. In this scene, her sister Ruth is having a seizure and Mrs. Lockton is beating her with a stick. Isabel jumped on her sister and took the beating. She explained," I threw myself on top of my sister. The broom came down on my back, once, twice, but it didn't matter"(94). This proves a strong character because she is sacrificing herself getting hurt for her sister.
