“Naturally, each of us loves his or her own offspring, but it’s often startling to see how many parents are downright disdainful of other people’s kids. When we add the folks who aren’t parents at all, it becomes even clearer that our culture isn’t especially supportive of children in general, nor is there a surfeit of fondness for particular children unless they’re cute and well behaved.”
