Mitchell is working pretty hard to make the Klan sympathetic...man, Reconstruction *sucked*.

I like Scarlett the businessperson much better than Scarlett the coquette.

The book gets way more interesting after like page 400

Ok this book is definitely racist as all hell. The whole birth/Atlanta burning scene is so awful it made me want to out the book down. Scarlet isn't brave or can-do, she's helpless. Yet the scorn heaped on Prissy, the 12 year old, for being terrified and inexperienced, is downright disgusting.

Ah, Rhett Butler. You're a caricature of yourself. But then again, so is everyone else. So what is Mitchell saying? Is this just a dime-store romance novel, or is she lampooning the South mercilessly? I smell a term paper...

73 pages in, Scarlett realizes suddenly that if she doesn't *tell* Ashley she's into him, he won't *know*. ::sigh:: Good job Scarlett. Way to be.
