Death is nature of life because in the book Darren is taking some test to prove him self, But the test are all made foe vampires so as a half vampire its quite heard for him. He can die anytime. He believe no matter what everyone have to die one day, even vampire. So he is doing the test without caring about death because we all gonna die one day.
