The prisoners’ trek through the desert to reach the powerful city of Oburan, where they will be judged by city’s royal council, the Ila. The main character Marak is the son of a king from another city who has suffered from a disease known as “the madness,” and he is plagued with dark visions and the voices of demons. This pushed him out of his home, and he wants to fight the Ila to restore honor to his name.
