I don't think the scene when Glinda and Elphaba meet the Wizard of Oz is very clear. Also in the book the Wizard of Oz the wizard is not actually a real wizard, but in Wicked he is very scary and seems to be real. In Wicked the characters do not see his face. I can not tell if the wizard is real or not. I think the book will later come back to reveal if he is real or not.

A moment that surprised me was when Galinda, a good witch in The Wizard of Oz, is judgemental and two faced to Elphaba. Her roomate is Elphaba and she pretends to be friends with her, but then goes to her other friends and gossips about her. Galinda tells Elphaba she looks beautiful in her hat, but she then gossiped about her to Pfanny and Shenshen, her other friends.

One charater in the book Wicked I do not feel synthethetic for is Melana. Melana is the mother of Elphaba, who will become the wicked witch of the west. Melana is always complaining about being alone, while her husband, Frex is away. Melana needs a lot of attention. Which she does not get when she is with Elphaba who is only a baby. She is not a a very good mother. She speaks meanly to Elphaba and is often drunk.
