So far this is OK. I know there are some out there upset with the representation in the book. I don't really see it, but I will say that there is far more representation here than you'd normally see in a book in this series. I really only have two gripes. One is that this is moving pretty slowly and the other is the audiobook narrator. I'll elaborate more in comments.

I do kind of like where this is going for the most part, but I'm also a bit apprehensive. I don't really want the Engineers to be a visible part of the Aliens universe. I like them being an enigmatic, menacing ghost in the machine. I'm aware that the writers are given details of what should be in the book and general gists of where the universe is going, but still...

They're now in the Engineers' underground facility. Some interesting notions, but as a whole a lot of this just feels like a shorter story stretched very thin. This feels like it could have easily been a novella or short story as opposed to a full length novel, and delivered more of a punch. I don't necessarily fault the author for this since she likely had a ton of limitations put on her about what could be added.

OK. Halfway in, stuff is finally picking up. Xenos (of a sort) are rampaging. This reminds me of something others have complained about: the black goo. They say it doesn't act like this and I have to say... yes and no. Explanations (and slight spoilers) in comments.

As far as the complaints about "forced representation" goes, I suppose I can see it but then that's really only because I know about people complaining. I don't think they'd have complained as much if not for the slower pace so far in the book. Also, I'm still deciding about Mai. I feel bad for her so far, that's a lot to go through when she's ultimately still a child, but in the body of a bot of adult size.

The other gripe is the narrator. She's certainly talented, but she feels more like she's reading for a different audience. Her voice is incredibly soothing and if I were reading a romance, (human) thriller, or children's book, she'd be perfect. But here she just doesn't really seem to fit, her voice is too sedate. She also kind of strikes me as the type of narrator who would tell you that a character yawns while saying something instead of incorporating that yawn into what the character is saying, if that makes sense. Neither way of narrating is wrong or bad, but I prefer narrators that incorporate the yawn. I would have loved to have "seen" Bahni Turpin narrate this one, she seems to do better with action scenes and I loved her narration of the Andrea Vernon books.
That said, at least they have a black narrator reading a Zula Hendrix book this time. I get that the narrator who did her book had also read the one where there was also Ripley, but it just felt a little weird.
