“Berenice” 4/5; Ghastly stuff, loved it. “You deny it? — let us not argue the matter. Convinced myself, I seek not to convince.” Good line.

“Silence — A Fable” 3/5. Brief enough that the fable stuff gets to remain impactful instead of overwrought. Very lyrical prose, which I enjoyed! Ultimately a message neither profound nor even uncommon.

“Shadow — A Parable” 4/5. Read it, then went online and read some analysis, then read it again. The analysis absolutely helped me enjoy it more the second time.

“MS. Found In a Bottle,” 3/5. Reading up on this story and I see a lot of scholars think it was intended as satire. I quite like that take — it works better as a gag than as a ghost story.

Goal for this year is to read this all the way through. First story, “Metzengerstein,” 3/5. An interesting introductory tale with a really great ending. Ghostly revenge through a devil horse — neat!
