Peter, Eliza, and Andy are the main characters thus far. Peter has struggled with finding who he is but recently has had guidance from a strange teacher. This teacher, Mr. McArthur asked him if it would be better to fail at something worthwhile or fail at something meaningless. These types of guidance and inspiration have begun to shape these students as they start to think for themselves and discover who they are.

After businesses were shut down, the teenagers whose lives were intertwined learned that not everything about being an adult is handed to you. You have to fail and grow beyond your mistakes of the past to learn. The book ended with all the friends gathered, looking up, talking about if there would be a tomorrow as they watched the asteroid Ardor, but it was just a tiny speck in the sky slowly getting brighter.

The countdown is down to weeks until the astroid Ardor is rumored to destroy the world. After Eliza, Peter, Andy, Anita, and all the teenagers' lives were intertwined because of this disaster, first, they had decided to do good in the world and experience new things finally, but after buildings were out of business, phone lines went down, and their lives were no longer normal, they chose to love and live recklessly.

After finding out that there was an asteroid that might be headed toward these teenagers they individually struggled with making each of their days count. While some of the girls, such as Anita, who is terrified of death, began to feel this unbelievable lightness, others such as Peter are still trying to figure out who they are. Peter, while trying to protect the ones closest to him got caught up in some trouble.

In present-day Seattle, this book focuses on this group of six teenagers with various characteristics and different views on how they see the world around them and deal with difficult circumstances. There is possibly an approaching asteroid, and while some teens don't believe it, others do, so they begin to alter their everyday habits and seek the reality of their life on earth, and live life to the fullest.
