This is a delightful book...mythologies and fairy tales of a culture can provide a view of the people...it comes as no surprise that the country Hans ChristianAndersen called home has more than a few meremaid/merefolk tales. The one I'm reading now has a remarkable consonance with our current folk tales: the meremaid protagonist has distinct Kardashian overtones re: values and depth. Likes the bling; but is chaste.
