This story was trying to tell you that things that are traditions are to good to get rid of. I think that this book is trying to say this because even though Conrad is going to collage and his mom is sick Belly still thinks that it is important to keep up traditions and go to the summer house every year. Because it wouldn't be the same without it since they have been going there every year since the were little.
