celie is constantly beaten. harpo her step son is married but his wife has the upper hand, so his father and celie tell him to beat her. harpo's wife beat him up when he tried to since she grew up with brothers. she then talked to celie on why she did it and now they are close friends. harpo's wife tells celie to stick up for herself and challenge her husband

Celie's sister ran away to stay with them but the husband kicked her out. they were sad to leave each other again but celie said it was fine because she only needs god. When she requested a purple dress to wear when shopping for clothes he denied her and gave her only options of maroon, brown, or navy blue.
