So Andrei is thought to be dead but shows up during a winter storm in the middle of his wife's labour and then the baby is born but his wife dies?! Eff this.

Some favourite parts since my last progress update:
- "Is there even a word for 'forfeit' in Russian?! I should think not."
- The very long drawn out metaphor of a surrendered Moscow as a dying beehive.
- Napoleon being a spoiled brat
- plenty of emo moments (top fave)

Reading this for two reasons:
1. My niece wants to read it together (yes really).
2. It meets my book club prompt for "A book that intimidates you," and while it's not intimidating, I've certainly been avoiding it.
I've read a bunch of Dostoevsky and enjoyed it so I'm hoping the style here isn't too far off.
