Homers brother dies, the brothers best friend has no family, Homers family treats the friend as the brother.

Homer's brother, Ulysses, gets caught in an animal trap at a store. This slows down the whole telegraph office. Spangler goes to the bar with an old friend.

Homer and Hubert got in trouble so they had to stay after school. They almost missed the race but Homer and Hubert tied first place.

Homer Macauley delivers a message from the telegraph office to a woman about her son dying in the war. She welcomes him into her home to be nice but begins to weep and hug Homer and call him her son in dis- belief that her own son is dead. On the way back to the office, he realizes he feels disgusted and lonely. He tells his mother about his thoughts and she tells him that its the real world during times of war.

Homer Macauley is a sweet 14 year old boy that comes from a poor family with a mother, sister, and a brother. He goes and gets a delivery boy job at the telegraoh office to help his mom.
