At times this novel is satirical and nearly laughable. Surely noone on their right minds could believe that Yakov Bok has committed the crime he is accused of?

The problem is, that they don't need to believe it. Yakov Bok is a Jew and in the eyes of history, that is crime enough.

This is harrowing and depressing but immensely well written.

Brutal.
