Paul goes to his home in Germany since he is on leave. There he sees his family. His mom has cancer. It is hard for him to get used to home life after getting used to the war. After that, he goes to a war training camp. The Russian soldiers are taunted by the other German soldiers at a POW camp next to it. When he returns to the front, the Germans are losing. Paul is the only one of his friends still alive.

I don't connect very much with these characters. They are all German soldiers in World War 1. However, the main characters are students who volunteer to join the war. So, the only way I relate to these character is how I might act if I had to be in the army as a teenager. What makes me keep reading is that I'm interested in the two world wars and WW1 is a good place to start. Not many people know much about WW1.

The theme of my book is hard to tell already. But I would say it was probably friendship or family. All of the German soldiers rely on each other for food, supplies, and comfort in WW1. This theme is similar to The Outsiders because all the gang members count on each other. While the greasers aren't currently sleeping in mud beds or have constant artillery fire on them, it is in a way a little similar.
