The different sections of the book are nominally linked by discussions of freedom and autonomy in various forms, but (unlike other Greenblatt books) the overarching argument in this one matters less than insights into each play that you get along the way. This feels like what are probably Greenblatt's Harvard lectures on Shakespeare. If so the students are certainly getting great material.
