The atmosphere is similar, but there seems to be something more evanescent and delicate about them, reminding of the aesthetics of haiku or traditional Japanese art (by the way, isn't this cover gorgeous?) All the stories are short and well written, and Akutagawa's recurring themes are clearly recognisable: moral decay, the contradictions of modern Japan, the westernisation of its culture and society and the moral conflicts it brought about.
