Damn, it's depressing seeing my Sterek shelf dwindle and my reviews disappear.

I'm glad my reviews are backed up on Leafmarks but like otila said, any discussions I had are lost. I hate that GR doesn't warn us first before going on deleting sprees.
Jenna wrote: "I'm glad my reviews are backed up on Leafmarks but like otila said, any discussions I had are lost. Seriously, how hard is it to fix all the little things users have been requesting for YEARS? Leafmarks managed adding tons of those features in a matter of days after they'd been requested!
Is it because the writers don't want them on here or just a gdreads thing?Because I can respect the first but be annoyed at the latter.
I get all my Sterek rec's from goodreads and while I agree having fanfic on here is a grey area some of those stories are longer than many published books.
It's mostly at the writers' requests. Which is understandable, though disappointing, but that doesn't mean the disappearance of our reviews and discussion doesn't suck.

I think it's mostly the first. I probably should respect it, but not be honest, I really don't.
I understand the viewpoint of the fanfic writers who want them removed (I disagree with them, but I understand), but the least GR could do is warn us before deleting our reviews and discussions. It'd be even better if they sent us the backup of them.
It's all a bit upsetting to be honest, I was really getting into fandom and now I'm kind of terrified to do anything and I feel a bit crappy! Feels a lot like when I was in school and I wasn't cool enough for a certain group. I can't figure out Tumblr so I guess I'll never be cool enough for them! :(
Skyla wrote: "There also seems to be a bit of a fight going on about GR people coming from here to the fanfics and commenting and disrupting the fanfic people's safe space."See that's not cool. I'm all for us being able to express our opinions in our reviews however we wish here on GR, but to go to their fics and post stuff there is kinda shitty.

Hate to tell them that we were probably there already.

Also when did fanfic become a safe space?

Yes, I agree, but I think the ratings and comments on AO3 are more than a little inflated, and are giving people a false sense of their own writing skills. I'm not saying that people should comment negatively, but authors also shouldn't be surprised when not everyone showers them in praise.
Clearly they must not have the problems that ff.net used to have with flamers.

I also HATE that people want to make fandom this gated community, and keep people out. For me it goes against everything I got into fandom for.
Fandom snobbery is bad.

Agreed. I don't even bother trying to find anything on AO3 because it's impossible to find the good stuff. That's why I rely on my GR friends and their reviews :/
Skyla wrote: "I agree Gr should probably tell people they are going to delete stuff but then again there are 100s or reviews on some of these things so I can sort of understand."Which is exactly why I am of the opinion they shouldn't be deleted in the first place. Blah.

Aside from the fics being removed by request, we also have librarians NABing them like crazy....

Jenna wrote: "Agreed. I don't even bother trying to find anything on AO3 because it's impossible to find the good stuff. That's why I rely on my GR friends and their reviews :/ "Exactly. And it's not like you can have discussions with your friends about fics on AO3's comment sections.

That's really sad, I thought the whole point of fandom was to share the love of a series not exclude people.
Hey you might not be a 'cool-kid' but you're one us!
We'll be our own form of cool ;)

That too. Plus I thought more people reading your stuff would be good not bad.

Right! This is our place to freely discuss the stuff we read, whether we like it or not, and they're trying to control what we have to say about what they're putting out on the internet for ANYONE to view. I'm so frustrated.

Skyla wrote: "Not much you can do if the authors want them removed."I know, I still disagree with it though. Honestly, if these writers have such a problem with people expressing their opinions about stuff they've put out there for the public to have access to, they should probably delete them from the fanfic site so no one can read them. Otherwise, they should ignore what we have to say and just not go to GR.
Makes me not want to read their stuff. Heaven forbid I interrupt their "safe space" with my dirty presence. You'd think if this were their primary concern they'd be writing somewhere friend locked, or member's only.

*perks up* you have your own fic up?
How do I not know this?
*Stalker-mode engaged*

Most of us are pretty damned nice with our reviews, even the one and two star ones.
MLE wrote: "Makes me not want to read their stuff. Heaven forbid I interrupt their "safe space" with my dirty presence. If they want to control what people say about it, they need to limit the readership to only those who agree not to criticize.
Jenna wrote: "MLE wrote: "Makes me not want to read their stuff. Heaven forbid I interrupt their "safe space" with my dirty presence. Non stop praise and admiration is pretty worthless. I'd much rather have someone like, say Steelwhisper rip my story to pieces in a review, than one that's just OMG that's like the greatest thing evah.
It seems odd to me that the author making the biggest stink about it all has a recently released book that is P2P. Does she not want us to rate and review that one either? Well, I'm not gonna read and review it anyway just because of her attitude. I hope she doesn't ask us to review it on the blog. Actually, I hope she does so I can tell her no. >:)
I hadn't heard about gr people going onto their "safe space" to criticize. I thought this whole thing started because they don't want to be critiqued alongside "real books." By that author that changed the names in her fanfic and is now selling it as a "real book."

Yep. Very much appreciated, Rosa.

I do, it's het, and it's ancient, but it's there, and I own that junk like it's my own, which it is.
me
I've got no shame. I wrote bad anime fanfic for a series that had enough characters for me to work with.
Jenni Lea wrote: "It seems odd to me that the author making the biggest stink about it all has a recently released book that is P2P. Does she not want us to rate and review that one either? Well, I'm not gonna rea..."I wondered about that.

Also would like to say thanks for your efforts Rosa, you've recommended some great stuff that I'm pretty sure I would never have been able to find on my own on AO3.
I've never commented on any posts on AO3 but I've left kudos to the ones I really liked, maybe they'd prefer if we didn't do that either!
Jenna wrote: "Jenni Lea wrote: "It seems odd to me that the author making the biggest stink about it all has a recently released book that is P2P. Does she not want us to rate and review that one either? Well,..."Yeup. It makes what little sympathy I may have had shrivel up an die.
