British leadership up to Spion Kop has been stupefying. If you use WW1 as a lens to view the Boer War so far you can't be surprised about the decision-making in WW1. I see so much of WW1 (frontal assault tactics and resistance to other tactics) the war in Iraq (creating the environment which precipitated the war and poor preparation for it) in the Boer War.

Learning a lot about this overlooked imperial war. It's hard to develop to put either side in the right politically but I'm developing a lot of sympathy for the British soldier - poorly equipped by their government, and poorly prepared and led by their commanders.
