Make-up for 10/8:

The new people being introduced is starting to cause a new conflict. It's making the book a lot more intersting since everything feels new. Each character is giving different perspectives on the main conflict, which puts the reader in there with them.

Artemis makes a risky decision to try and save his father who's held captive on a ship. The mafia on board are in disbelief: "'He shot him,' yelped the khuligany. 'That devil shot his own father'" (Colfer 264). Artemis did this to try and be able to save his dad in the water while scaring off the mafia. A bold, yet effective strategy.

There was a very amusing section in my reading today, where Butler and Holly were talking and Holly talks about "[t]hat little misunderstanding last year. When you and Artemis kidnapped me" as if it were no big deal (Colfer 239). I just thought this was amusing since the team has encountered crazy new problems that some crazy things just seem normal.

Something I find interesting is that the team keeps having to resort back to getting the help of their enemies in order to deal with the bigger cause. Mulch acknowledges this by saying, "And as usual you need me to do your dirty work" (Colfer 204). This was interesting because both parties are realizing the danger of the situation.

When the commander gets trapped under a chunk of rubble, the team decides to use a super-powerful magnet to dislodge him. Once the commander is ripped from the rubble, he's asked what hurts, and says, "The general bodily area. Couple ribs gone" (Colfer 195). It was amusing to me that the commander so calmly and almost comedically responded.

The intensity of the situation is picking up now that the heroes narrowly survived an interaction with the goblins. They make a stunning realization when Artemis says, "That means there is probably some kind of revolution going on underground" (Colfer 167). The recognition that there's conflict underground starts a panic leading into the next section.

The humans and fairies are still struggling to work together, and we see tension between them, even when it is a life-threatening situation. Two of their members got trapped under an avalanche and as they try to pull them out, Artemis almost dies. Colfer writes, "[Artemis] stumbled forward... A painful death came rushing up to meet him... [Holly grabbed] her least favorite Mud Boy by the collar" (Colfer 131).

In Artemis Fowl, the original enemies begin to work together, but they run into issues. The fairies often look at humans with a judging eye due to their lack of advanced technology. After an intense fight with a new threat, Foaly criticizes the human's tech by saying, "Don't make me laugh... You're still using wires for heaven's sake. If it's been sent, I can trace it" (Colfer 102).

Make-up for 10/15:

The characters are now starting to work together, and now they're invading enemy territory. There's lots of tension between them because of distrust, and I'm expecting that there will be a betrayal soon.
