Copper has been a noted resource since Colombia’s in 1492.
Hundreds of years later, explorers would come to find that this Copper is native to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The UP was mysterious but that didn’t stop Schoolcraft and Houghton from exploring and learning the land.
Their first trip they paddled all the way around and found that Copper is natural in the UP & shared the news with the world.

While Houghton & Schoolcraft are discovering samples of the what the UP has to offer, Michigan is going through the process of statehood and battles with Ohio!
While Michigan was growing there was the city of Toledo in which was a economic asset & a land dispute which ultimately gave Toledo to Ohio and the Upper Peninsula to Michigan!

Not many know Douglas Houghton, one of the pioneers of Michigan statehood in the 1800’s
Houghton grew up in a home where education was highly sought after and eventually became a science professor with a focus in geography and soon would travel to Detroit to share his lectures that were widely popular.
