Barbauld…The will of the minority should never yield to that of the majority

Anna Letitia Barbauld…She consider the duties of a citizen in relation to its government… “A good government is the first of national duties and requires constant vigilance a good government will probably not last, if it’s conceived of it as of an indolent and passive happiness, to be left for its preservation to fortunate conjectures and variable chances… Our second duty is to keep it good.”

The positive review of “the vindication of the rights of men” in the Edinburgh Review was convinced that the author was a man, and was irritated to find that she was in fact female; it would it said, have affected how they reviewed it had they known.

Her “vindication of the rights of men”… still stands as a cry of infuriated exasperation as the chance to make men and women equal citizens slipped by

The phrase “Virtue can only flourish amongst equals” is often quoted as though Mary wrote it about relations between the sexes; in fact it was part of her attack on the economic status quo in the next question of land usage, and was written and worked it was primarily about the rights of men.

She believed passionately that women could be fundamentally changed by education, and that this intern would benefit society as a whole…
