I think it was in Mike Wallace's autobiography where I read about him interviewing Mailer about this book in particular. Wallace basically said the same thing to Mailer about pulling it out of ass.

Hi Kurt, I do not know who Mike Wallace is. Mailer projects his fantasies and obsessions onto Marilyn Monroe. It is pompous but interesting.

It is pompous but interesting."Ah, yeah Mike Wallace had his own TV talk show in the 60s and then was one of the original reporters on 60 Minutes back in the 70s. I'm always fascinated by Norman Mailer and his books. I wonder if that Mailer interview is on Youtube come to think of it.
