The review which stated, "Nicola Griffith did her research, and she wants you to know it," was absolutely not exaggerating.

The story of Hild *is* interesting, but when the book spends pages speaking about outlying and/or minor lords and their retinues, it becomes a slog (historically accurate though it may be, given the amount of conflict among neighboring fiefdoms).

I do plan to finish, but probably not quickly.
