Such a strange family. The frontier was hard. Interesting wonderings about being worn down and not knowing the difference anymore. And as I suspected, the reverend is a fire and brimstone person

I wonder if the Reverend looking like Moses is foreshadowing or just expressing how much bigger young people see things. And of course the wife seems to be much younger, and Phemy is scared.... not very encouraging.

Aww. Growing up isnt easy, especially when you have people trying to tell you how and who to be.

Why is James basically the third parent? Is it just he is so set in his way and stubborn. Or is he the fathers favorite child? This family dynamic is a bit weird.

Have mixed feelings about the dad. He seems good hearted, but the way he talks of needing Tecumseh to come back, to keep track of him, is creepy. I get the fear and unstable trust, but.... yeah.....

Also, her friendship with Nancy Maxwell is strange and uncomfortable. Maybe there are very few other children, but Nancy is a very poor substitute for a friend. It feels familiar. Childhood relationships with adults. The lack of knowing from the parents. The talking of un-safe subjects. Not quite the level of enmeshment, but there is the groundwork there

I like that there is room to grow. The childness of Becca. The way she is confused and unsure about being in between, about what she knows as "civilized" and who falls into that category, and what it means.
Still, some things that are insensitive. Maybe theyll be overcome. Dunno yet. Also, this is supposed to turn into a romance and he's 23 years older than her. Ew. Also, people back then.
