(1) At this point, Riordan's laying on the boy/girl drama really thick.
- A bit too thick... like biting into a cupcake and getting a mouthful of icing.
- Narration's saying the quiet part out loud.
(2) "I definitely couldn't tell Annabeth, 'Hey, let me borrow your phone so I can call Rachel!'"
- Yes, and definitely don't say it's because a dream made you to spy into Rachel's bedroom at night... oops, you did.

(1) "With luck, [Kronos'] spread so thin that he'll never be able to form a consciousness again, much less a body. But don't mistake him for dead, Percy."
- How very Voldemort of him. Or perhaps this is a concept from myth and came first?
(2) Hermes: "We gods have never been good at keeping oaths. You were born because of a broken promise, eh?"
- Huh, "a broken promise." Funny euphemism for rampant infidelity.

(1) "[Annabeth] fought me and screamed, 'I HATE you!' I wasn't sure who she was talking to—me or Luke or Kronos."
- At this point, who knows. My advice is to not overanalyze it, and just assume she hates everyone and everything.
- I wasted a too much time as a teen trying to untangle things girls say.
(2) "[Luke] stepped toward Annabeth, but I put myself between him and her."
- Yes, literally and figuratively.

(1) Unintentionally amusing is the how the narrator applies thick ethnic accents to ostensibly American characters.
- Chris Rodriguez sounds super-Mexican, which, I guess, goes hand-in-hand with Ethan Nakamura sounding super-Japanese.
(2) "I was pretty sure Rachel had just dumped me, which was lame considering we'd never even been together."
- Wake up, Percy! You've been common-law married to Annabeth as well!

(1) Percy: '"C'MON, you stupid worm! Look at me!" For the next several minutes, all I saw were teeth.'
- I'm pretty sure worms don't have eyes... I don't think they have teeth either.
(2) I'm not sure if I should be glad or not that the book wasn't memorable enough for me to remember the plot twist at the end of Chapter 16.
- Don't get me wrong, it's a good plot twist, it just didn't make a lasting impression.

(1) Chiron: "I should make sure my brethren don't go too overboard with the root beer."
- Turns out the reason the Party Ponies are so rowdy is because they're on a nonstop sugar high.
- I wonder what their rate of diabetes is.
(2) You know, it's very difficult to write a chaotic battle scene. This book does okay, but a lot of it still feels glossed over and the outcome taken for granted, like a movie montage.

(1) Kronos: "Go now, Ethan. Work on improving your memory. We will talk again when we have taken Manhattan."
- Yes, just like the Muppets took Manhattan in 1984. The Titans even have a lady pig on their side.
- In my mind, I see Ethan frantically doing jigsaw puzzles and consuming omega-3 fatty acids. Though, finding fish in the middle of a war is going to be a problem, especially with Percy controlling water.

(1) 'Silena threw her arms around [Percy]. Then she pushed back awkwardly, glancing at Annabeth. 'Um, sorry.'"
- I wonder when the point was where everybody except Percy and Annabeth accepted and treated them as a defacto couple? Possibly once Rachel conceded defeat.
(2) "[Annabeth] got a faraway look in her eyes. Her breath smelled of grapes, maybe from the nectar."
- Where I come from, that's called "drunk."

(1) Percy: "Don't I get a kiss for luck? It's kind of a tradition, right?"
Annabeth: "Come back alive, Seaweed Brain. Then we'll see."
- I guess by now it is tradition. He's always getting kissed by girls when he's off to do something dangerous.
- This book alone, so far, Percy's been kissed by Rachel, Mrs. O'Leary and six Aphrodite girls. Though, it's telling that this is the first time Percy's asked for one.

Notes:
(1) Katie Gardner and Jake Mason both have British accents. Bold choice my the narrator... or else he just ran out of viable accents.
- Though it's never explicitly stated, I'd always assumed that Camp Half-Blood was strictly American (maybe Canada too).
- The accents make foreign campers canon.
(2) Annabeth activates all the bronze statues in New York to become fighting automatons.
- How very Ghostbusters II.

(1) "A security guard was sitting behind the desk in the lobby, reading a big black book with a flower on the cover."
- Judging by the time frame, this must be a "New Moon" reference.
- Riordan's poking fun at everyone: "Harry Potter," "Twilight"...
(2) "Different elevator music was playing since my last visit—that old disco song 'Stayin' Alive.'"
- Old goes without saying, there's been no new disco since '82.

To be fair people waited from at least book 3 for this overt romance talk. I say let ‘em have it and give us more Riordan! Percabeth is one of the series’ only stand out qualities so he has to flaunt it now. It’s cute, we’re not objecting😂 you have to embrace the teen romance Jay!

Personally, I'd like it to have been a bit more complex and a bit more subtle (or subtle period), but middle-grade books work differently, I guess. 🤷♂️😅
