Rereading this gem again (but a different edition/translation) and something struck me right off the bat. Based off my layman’s understanding of the disorder I think Meursault is on the autism spectrum, it would explain many of his inner thoughts and behaviours.

I rummaged used bookstores just so I could find the version that had the phrase: “And I fired four more times into the lifeless body and the bullets sank in without leaving a mark. And it was like giving four sharp knocks at the door of unhappiness.” I love that phrase so much. My first copy (brand new from a bookshop) said “… the door of destiny.” And I always thought that sounded so stupid…
